With few surprises, techies were underwhelmed with Apple’s iPad 2 announcement, but I’m confident that consumers will be thrilled with the product. Apple already had a massive lead in the consumer tablet market it created, and these “underwhelming” upgrades should keep the company comfortably ahead. Apple has given competitors an opening by sticking to 3G, and it did not further pressure them with a lower entry price point or higher-resolution display. However, Apple has three critical advantages.

1. Brand: When consumers are thinking about tablets, they say they are buying an “iPad,” not a “tablet.” The iPad was already the category and volume leader, and the iPad 2 builds on that. In this respect, Apple actually benefits from the crowd of new tablets hitting the market. If there were only one or two strong competitors, consumers would be able to weigh the pros and cons of each offering, but with dozens and dozens of options hitting the market over the next few months, decision paralysis can set in and many consumers will throw up their hands and make the “safe” choice: the iPad.

2. iTunes: The iPad is still the only tablet on the market with a huge digital marketplace for movies, TV shows, and music. Some competitors are taking steps in this direction (e.g., Samsung’s Hub), but iTunes remains a significant competitive advantage.

3. App Store: If all you want to do is browse the Web and check e-mail, any tablet will probably suffice. However, Apple has an enormous lead in purpose-built apps. The Android ecosystem is strong and app availability should improve significantly over time, but the iPad 2 is considerably more versatile than any of its competitors right now, and it appears unlikely to lose its lead any time in the near future.

So if you are competing with Apple, what should you do? Rather than copying Apple’s products, copy its old advertising tag line and Think Different.

Apple’s brand is focused on creative types (or those who aspire to be), which is why it spends so much effort creating things like GarageBand. Competitors should target IT managers, knowledge workers, outdoorsy people, or some other group and build software and hardware combinations better suited to those use cases. Of course, this will take imagination and the ability to tie hardware, software, and services together to build unique experiences. There are some companies thinking outside the box (HTC and RIM have clearly differentiated products on their roadmaps), but for the vendors who are trying to out-Apple Apple… good luck. Here are some pointers, you’re going to need them:

• Based on Apple’s financials, it is clear that the iPad with WiFi is Apple’s volume product and 3G versions are merely gravy. Why is the competition only targeting the gravy?

• iTunes remains a significant competitive advantage for Apple – I cannot easily explain to novices how to get a movie onto the XOOM. Rivals need an “iTunes” of their own, but having one just achieves parity with Apple, so partnering is an acceptable approach. However, half measures are not enough; digital media stores must include movies (including rentals) and TV shows and music. If multiple partners are used, the tablet vendor still needs to provide a common interface and single account/billing relationship.

• Nintendo has a significant base of game developers targeting the 3DS; if you cannot muster equivalent resources (for gaming, media playback, or some other use), adding 3D to your tablet is just a gimmick.

• Apple’s rivals can compete on 4G, higher-resolution displays, or a lower price. Even speed is a potential differentiator from a technical perspective; NVIDIA has quad-core processors sampling this month, so rivals could build even faster tablets for this holiday season. However, I must still caution vendors that all of these factors are irrelevant if consumers do not want your product.

I read an interesting article this morning that suggested Apple would change its mind and put Adobe’s Flash technology on its iOS devices within a year. I don’t think that’s going to happen.

In an open letter to users, Apple CEO Steve Jobs gave several reasons why he didn’t want Flash on the iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. They are: Flash isn’t open; the full web; reliability, security and performance; battery life; and touch.

Adobe began shipping Flash Player 10.1 for Mobile last June, but even Laptop magazine admitted that “Steve Jobs was right,” and that “Adobe’s offering seems like it’s too little, too late.” Granted, that report was from six months ago, but it still doesn’t bode well for the technology.

There is no doubt that Adobe is making advances with Flash on mobile devices, but I don’t believe future changes will be enough to get Apple to adopt the technology.

Jobs has been very clear that Apple supports HTML5, an open technology that is controlled by a standards committee, not one company. By building support for that technology into Webkit, Apple is ensuring that mobile Web browsers will be able to access what we’ve come to know as the “full web.”

Webkit is used by Google, Palm, Nokia and RIM, so it has a pretty solid base.

One of the arguments often bantered about when the discussion of the “full Web” comes up is video. There is no doubt that Flash made huge strides over the years in having sites like YouTube encode their videos in Flash. But that’s for the desktop.

As Jobs points out, almost all of this video is also available in H.264 format (a format Flash also supports), so it’s viewable on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

“Add to this video from Vimeo, Netflix, Facebook, ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, ESPN, NPR, Time, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated, People, National Geographic, and many, many others. iPhone, iPod and iPad users aren’t missing much video,” wrote Jobs.

You may ask why other companies adopted Flash for their mobile devices when Apple won’t. That’s easy, they are looking for something they have that Apple doesn’t. Considering how hard it is for tablet makers to compete with Apple, any perceived advantage will work.

I’m not an Adobe hater—I know quite a few people that work at Adobe and I think they’ve done some amazing things over the years. Flash for mobile devices isn’t one of them.

Chris Dawson said he gives “Apple a year until they cave [and adopt Flash]. Android tablets will just be too cool and too useful for both entertainment and enterprise applications if they don’t.”

I have been using my iPhone for years and my iPad for one year. I honestly can’t remember the last time I went to a Web site that wouldn’t load because I didn’t have Flash installed. I can load videos from YouTube and a host of other sites too, no problem.

Apple has sold more than 160 million iOS devices and there are no screaming, angry hordes of users breaking down the doors at 1 Infinite Loop demanding Flash on their devices.

In order for Apple to change its mind and adopt Flash, the technology has to be proven to be indispensable and that it will benefit its users. Apple has proven just the opposite is true.

The major legislative item on the agenda in the Senate this week will be The Small Business Reauthorization Act (S. 493).  Republicans plan to use this bill as a platform to promote critical pieces of legislation through the process of non-germane amendments to the bill.  Here are some vital amendments that will be debated and voted on throughout the week:

  • Senator Mitch McConnell is offering an amendment (S. AMDT 183) to prohibit the EPA from promulgating any regulations on greenhouse gas emissions.  There is perhaps no force that is more destructive to our prosperity, consumer freedom of choice, and job creation than onerous cap and trade schemes.  There are many red state Democrats who are up for reelection in 2012 and will be hard pressed to go on record as supporting policies that are an imprecation to the interests of their states.  Make sure to call Senators Claire McCaskill, Joe Manchin, Ben Nelson, Bill Nelson, and Jon Tester in particular.

  • Senator David Vitter is offering an amendment (S.AMDT. 178) forcing the federal government to sell off unused and underused property.  This is a serious issue.  The federal government owns over half of the land in some western states and has been using it to stifle energy development.  Selling unused federal lands would also serve as a prudent means of generating revenue without raising taxes.

  • Senator Rand Paul is using the SBA bill as a platform to offer his signature budget bill (S.AMDT 199) which would slash $200 billion in spending for fiscal 2011.  Paul’s plan slashes funding by 50% to the Departments of Energy, Education, and HUD.  This amendment represents real limited government and budget austerity and will separate the men among the boys in the ranks of the Republican Conference.

  • Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison is forcing a vote (S. AMDT 197) to delay the implementation of ObamaCare until a final resolution is reached in pending lawsuits.  Unlike other bills that are designed to merely ameliorate ObamaCare, this amendment would completely halt it during the ensuing legal battles.

  • Senator Tom Coburn has filed an amendment (S.AMDT.184) to force federal agencies to compile comprehensive lists of all of their programs

Make sure that all of your Republican senators are on record supporting these amendments, especially Rand Paul’s budget proposal.  Also, let’s see which faux moderate Democrats will commit to supporting anyone of these commonsense initiatives.  Needless to say, I didn’t waste time calling my senators; Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin!

Being Right or Making Money

The U.S. military is getting serious about energy change

One thing the military is getting right these days: Making the connection between fossil fuel dependence and insecurity. I did a lot of research in the past year on efforts throughout the Department of Defense as a whole, and especially within the Navy and Air Force, to improve energy efficiency on military bases in the United States. For instance, Jacksonville Naval Air Station, in Jacksonville, Florida, has put young officers in charge of changing the culture of energy use from within their own units. They've convinced their fellow soldiers to make small changes, like turning off lights that aren't being used or sharing a single coffeemaker among several people. More importantly, they've got soldiers thinking in broad ways about energy, waste, and future security—What else could be done with the money spent on unnecessary energy use? What happens in a fuel-related crisis if this base can't be more self-sufficient?

These changes in culture and ways of thinking are making a difference. Last summer, officers at Jacksonville Naval Air Station told me that, thanks to several different energy efficiency campaigns and improvements, they've watch activity on the base increase over the last three years while energy use on the base has fallen.

There are some interesting and important changes afoot in the way the military handles energy. And not just at home. David Biello of Scientific American has a really fascinating story about the Department of Defense getting involved with ARPA-e—a Department of Energy program for developing cutting-edge energy technology. Among the collaborations: Energy storage systems for the front lines of war.

That's why the U.S. Defense (DoD) and Energy (DoE) departments are partnering on initiatives to further develop and test energy-storage technologies first developed by ARPA-e. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced two such development and deployment partnerships on March 2 for power electronics modules and batteries capable of storing megawatts of power--both to be funded by a requested $25 million each from DoD and ARPA-e in the fiscal year 2012 budget.

"Twenty-five million dollars is the cost of one H-1 helicopter," Mabus said. "The change that $25 million from DoD and ARPA-e can generate, can multiply that one helicopter hundreds and thousands of times."

Mabus was referring to saving both lives--for every 24 fuel convoys in Afghanistan and Iraq, one soldier or Marine is killed or wounded, according to a U.S. Army study--and money. The DoD fuel bill came to some $14 billion in 2010. "For every dollar the price of a barrel of oil goes up, the Navy spends $31 million more for fuel," Mabus noted. "Our dependence on fossil fuels creates strategic, operational and tactical vulnerabilities for our forces."

The Navy has taken a lead in attempting to change that, setting a goal of deriving half its energy needs from non-fossil fuel sources by 2020 as well as making half of its bases energy self-sufficient.

Scientific American: U.S. Military links energy research to lives and dollars saved

Once again investors came out in full force to buy the fucking dip on Friday after learning that Qaddafi's men opened fire
on protesters in Tripoli in Moammar's shoot first, shoot later
negotiations policy, GDP was revised down to "QE3 is coming," gold rose
to over $1,400 an ounce once again making Flavor Flav's teeth the most expensive commodity in the world, and the US government threatens to shut down while individual states bust unions (and if it is this Union's bust, then Money McBags approves) and teachers across the country get pinkslipped (while others slip pink).  So once again cognitive dissonance reigns like Peter the Great in 18th century Russia or like Ms. San Antonio (only without eating so many tacos).

With Saudi Arabia promising to pump out enough oil to support both lost Libyan production and an even better Oil Rumble,
and with consumer sentiment rising in everything but how the consumer
sentiment number is calculated (Money McBags will guess lovingly and
with a fuckload of goal seeking and hard coding), investors ignored
every other bit of common sense, toggled away from Kate Upton's twitter pics, and jumped back in to the market faster than Charlie Sheen jumps back in to a bottle of vodka (or Capri Anderson's rectum).

Anyway, Money McBags thought he would try a gimmick for Friday's
wrap-up because all writers need to find new tricks (especially ones
like Money McBags as he writes as if he is trying to put his round peg
through Karissa Shannon's
spare hole).  So in honor of Sunday's Oscars, Money McBags thought he
would equate each news item of the day to a best picture nominee simply
because he needs a challenge.

Inception goes to consumer sentiment hitting its highest level in 3 years
because clearly consumers must be dreaming of something other than the
declining buying power of the dollar and the shitawful ponzeconomy™ if
they really feel confident about anything other than their savings being
fucked (and see, that's funny because most of them have no savings).
The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan/Vivid Video survey on
consumer sentiment came in at 77.5 which was up from 74.2 in January
and the highest since January 2008 which was right when the last guy on
the Street knew that bank balance sheets were more fictitious than a Dr. Boris Sachakov hemorrhoid removal,
so um, look out below.  The number was above the median forecast of
75.3, above the early February reading of 75.1, and above Money McBags'
sentiment of "you have to be kidding me" because the only times Money
McBags has been less confident in the consumer was during the Beanie
Baby phase and when Garth Brooks went platinum.  Consumers reported
"significant" labor market improvements, judged their personal
finances more favorably than at any other time in the past three years,
and insisted that redneck is a religion.

True Grit goes to GDP which keeps trying to tough it out despite being more fucked than David Wu's political career. GDP for Q4 was revised down to 2.8% annual growth,
below 3.2% guesses, and well below the 5% needed to lower the 9%
unemployment rate without just clerically adjusting the labor force
participation rate down again (Money McBags' "Fuck Off" strategy), but
hey, just buy the fucking dip.  The slower growth was driven by deeper
spending cuts by state and local governments who continue to suffer
from lower tax revenues and reality.

Toy Story 3 goes to the Ben Bernanke who is treating M2 as if it is Monopoly money as the money supply not only grows faster than Cameron Diaz on the awesomeness scale but is more correlated to the rise in the S&P
than tinnitus is correlated to attending a Black Eyed Peas concert.
But hey, Money McBags guesses we will learn the hard way that Zimbabwe isn't just for lovers (lovers of AIDS that is).

The Kids Are Alright goes to the state of Wisconsin whose teachers have missed work to protest cuts to their health care benefits and collective bargaining rights as a union which has caused senate Democrats to flee the state
to avoid voting as it is always best to run from bullies.  Teacher
protests give kids more time to stay at home, fire up the playstation,
and plan the next rainbow party, which is alright with Money McBags.

The King's Speech goes to Libyan dictator Moammar Qaddafi who got up in the center of Tripoli on Friday and threatened to make his country a living hell
and kill those who oppose him.  When protesters heard this, they
rejoiced, claiming a living hell would be three steps up from Libya's
current living situation which is so bad it has been compared to having
to french kiss Kathy Griffin's sphincter.

Winter's Bone goes to Winter Pierzina
as who wouldn't want to giver her a bone?  And, yes, that has nothing
to do with the economy or the market, but it is very important to
confirm.

The Fighter goes to all of the protesters in the Middle
East and Northern Africa who are tired of some asshole despotic ruler
continually oppressing them and are now striving to become that asshole
ruler to be able to oppress the factions they hate.  How these Middle
East protests have not spooked the market more is a question for which
Money McBags is seeking an answer (though he is pretty sure the answer
isn't pussy furry).

Black Swan goes to AIG who in a black swan event shit
on the global economy a few short years ago as their derivatives book of
credit default swaps (which had a one in bazillion chance of blowing up
according to the douchenozzles who were writing that shit and whose
bonuses relied on writing it, but nothing to see there) found itself in
the Gaussian curve's fat tail
and blew the fuck up as insuring something without actually putting
aside the money in case that thing you are insuring gets fucked is as
dumb of a business as ZAGG or a Wilford Brimley
tongue kissing booth.  But it gets even better because in an even
bigger black swan event, this fucking company is still in business
somehow (because apparently criminal actions don't get punished in the
US if you have a good lawyer and are on the government's payroll) and on Friday they put up a big Q but sold off
as investors raised concerns over AIG's huge property insurance
business, its aircraft leasing unit, and how the fuck they can actually
trust a company that came within a Verne Troyer
nut hair of blowing up the world.  Money McBags isn't saying AIG is a
shitty company, he's saying they are a fucking shitty company.

127 Hours goes to every company that had earnings or
analyst ratings changes on Friday because in 127 hours (or 3 to be more
precise) no one will remember and the stocks will trade on new
speculation (and by new speculation, Money McBags means the Fed's
continued capital injection).  In earnings on Friday, Salesforce.com
apparently sold the fuck out of some forces beating earnings guesses and raising full year guidance as cloud computing remains hotter than Tulip sales in the Netherlands in the 1600s or two lip sales in Eliot Spitzer's hotel rooms in the 2000s.  In other earnings news, ADSK saw profits rise
23% on a 16% increase in revenues and the company is now up 45% for the
year as more people use their autocad software to design the cardboard
boxes in to which they have moved.

In other company news, FSLR was down 6%
despite higher profits as the solar panel maker burned investors by
forecasting weaker sales this year and warned it would cut prices to
compensate for the end of solar subsidies in Europe.  That said, a
flurry of analysts raised their price targets on the stock because
lowered sales forecasts didn't effect their hardcoded models.  Finally
WFC climbed after Goldman raised its rating on the stock to "buy" from
"neutral" after the analyst was told he hadn't published anything on
WFC in a while and needed to drum up some trading flow.

What to Expect When Getting a Roofing Contractors

When it comes time to correct or substitute your roof, it's really a challenging job to find someone who is actually competent to do the job. There are lots of roofers out there, but the ones who will perform a congrats for any sensible cost are not frequently easy to find. If you are in the marketplace for a contractor, make use of the tips beneath with regard to interviewing and hiring the correct one.

Interview as well as Discussion

Interview auf kwerfeldein.de (shameless self-promotion) by eyec@cher (Robert Herrmann) - busy

Most roofing companies offer totally free consultations. This is particularly essential, because it gives them a chance to evaluate what your homes roof requirements, also it gives you a chance to assess them. As with all of companies, trust your instincts concerning the individuals a person allow upward on your roof. No matter exactly how good the contractor's reputation or even suggestion, he ought to begin by presenting a person having a business card. If the contractor occurs looking as well as talking within an unprofessional manner, chances are that the task he is going to do will also be unprofessional. This is not to say that you should anticipate contractors to reach within suits. They is going to be hiking in your roofing, so most is going to be dressed in denim jeans and work footwear or sneakers. If the actual service provider appears to be interested in talking on his cell phone while on your roof than he's in evaluating your own roof's requirements, which may be an additional indication that he is not really the main one to do the job. For the lawful protection, be certain that the actual contractor offers sufficient liability insurance coverage.

Roof Assessment

DSC01425 by **emmar**

Anticipate the contractor is going to be rising in your roofing. Actually, any kind of contractor who not need to increase on your roof to judge the problem ought to be immediately discounted. Those who are serious about their own work will possibly create a drawing of your roof's surface as well as tag problem areas on it because they go through their own evaluation, or even they will take pictures or video from the surface while they are up there. This is a very essential step, since it enables you to see exactly what the troubles are and understand how they will be fixed.

Estimate

Roof repair estimate by e_hillman

The next step would be the created estimation. The contractor will take away their loan calculator and are available track of a written estimate. Some companies goes to their own truck or even truck and write up the actual proposal, while others may crisis the actual numbers to do the job in front of you. Once you are given the suggestion, ensure that you understand which products is going to be utilized, just how long the task will take and if you will find any additional or even concealed expenses that may arise throughout the repair of the roofing. The service provider should be able to answer many of these questions with ease as well as forewarn you of any extra costs that might be sustained should the roof's ethics end up being broken inside.

After you have obtained several written estimates from roofers, evaluate what each company or even service provider would like to provide for the cost. Do not necessarily discount the highest bid, because occasionally the highest bet will actually function as the contractor who does the task properly. Also, be skeptical associated with prices for bids that are not nearly as expensive other people. They may be using substandard products or perhaps be unethical concerning the possibility of concealed costs. Most importantly, believe in instincts as well as opt for the actual contractor that makes you feel most comfy regarding giving over your hard earned money.

Seven Uyghurs Sentenced to Death

2011-03-23

Critics of the sentences say China has politicized the robberies as acts of terrorism.

AFP

A Uyghur man walks past armed Chinese security forces in Urumqi, July 17, 2009.

Chinese authorities in the northwestern region of Xinjiang have ordered the executions of seven ethnic minority Uyghur men convicted of "violent" crimes, official media said on Wednesday.

The death sentences were handed down by the Supreme People's Court in recent days, according to state media in the regional capital, Urumqi.

The men were accused in connection with three separate attacks late last year in the Silk Road city of Kashgar, according to the news website Urumqi Online.

According to another website, the Xinjiang-based Tianshan news site, Aimaiti Tuheti, Yiming Dawuti, and unnamed "others" killed a security guard at a pedestrian mall as part of a failed Aug. 7 robbery attempt.

In a separate incident on Oct. 12, it said, Nuermaimaiti Aobulikasimu and 11 others broke into a house, bound and killed the couple living in it, and took their possessions.

It said the group also broke into the homes of two brothers, robbed them, and killed six people in a Nov. 11 attack in Kashgar.

The report gave no information about the victims or the schedule for the executions.

Three of the men were sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, a sentence that is normally commuted to life imprisonment in China's judicial system.

They were convicted of deliberate homicide and armed robbery by the Kashgar Intermediate People's Court in the first instance.

'Strike hard' campaign

A Han Chinese resident of Urumqi surnamed Yang said a reference to "terrorism" in official news reports on the case showed that it was being politicized by the authorities, who have launched a series of "strike hard" campaigns in Xinjiang following deadly ethnic violence in July 2009.

"There is an implied political meaning; that they were somehow engaged in separatist activities or ethnic divisions," said Yang.

Exile Uyghur groups said the trials had been conducted behind closed doors, with scant opportunity for public scrutiny.

"The entire process against these men, from the trial through to the judgment, was opaque," said Dilxat Raxit, spokesman for the Munich-based World Uyghur Congress.

"There was also very little reasonable evidence to convict them on a legal basis, because all the evidence came from one side of the case," he said.

"We strongly condemn the Chinese government for continuing to pursue their policies of ethnic division," said Raxit.

"We are also strongly opposed to the death penalty in this case."

Earlier cases

Last month, the Supreme Court sentenced four Uyghurs to death for alleged involvement in an Aug. 19 bomb attack in Xinjiang’s western Aksu city.

The World Uyghur Congress pointed to concerns over lack of transparency in those cases too.

The Aksu blast left eight people dead, including two of the bombers, and 15 wounded after a man riding a three-wheeled vehicle threw explosives at a group of uniformed patrolmen. Four Uyghurs were arrested shortly after the attack.

State media characterized the cases as acts of terrorism and unrelated to longstanding ethnic tensions between Uyghurs and Han Chinese in the region.

Exiled Uyghur dissident Rebiya Kadeer has warned that attacks like those in Aksu will continue to occur until Beijing addresses the underlying source of tension in the region.

Millions of Uyghurs—a distinct, Turkic minority who are predominantly Muslim—populate Central Asia and Xinjiang.

Uyghurs say they have long suffered ethnic discrimination, oppressive religious controls, and continued poverty and joblessness despite China's ambitious plans to develop its vast northwestern frontier.

Those frustrations erupted in July 2009 in deadly riots that left nearly 200 people dead, by the Chinese government's tally.

At least 26 people, mostly Uyghurs, were sentenced to death in the aftermath of the riots, many of whom have been executed, according to state media.

China is believed to execute more people each year than the rest of the world’s countries combined, although the government does not publish official figures.

Rights groups say Beijing may execute as many as several thousand prisoners annually.

Chinese authorities blame Uyghur separatists for a series of deadly attacks in recent years and accuse one group in particular of maintaining ties to the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

New training scheme

China on Wednesday also announced a training scheme which places ethnic minority graduates from Xinjiang in work elsewhere in China.

Governments of the destination cities will spend 450 million yuan (U.S.$ 69 million) for the program, while Xinjiang will spend 400 million yuan (U.S.$ 61 million), the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The program targets some 60,000 jobless college graduates in Xinjiang, around 80 percent of whom are from ethnic minorities, and 60 percent of whom are women.

However, some commentators see the move as an attempt to assimilate non-Han Chinese into mainstream Chinese culture.

"From the point of view of ethnic minorities, the graduate work scheme is really taking the cream of youth from the minorities and using them to 'further cultural development,'" wrote one ethnic minority user on a popular microblogging service.

"In fact, the culture that is being advanced is Han culture, and this group of young people will have been totally brainwashed," the microblog update said.

An Urumqi resident surnamed Li agreed.

"They have run senior high school schemes like this before during the past few years," he said.

"Whether it's high-schoolers or graduate training programs, these are measures that are aimed at thought control and brainwashing, and the 'Partification' of their education," he said.

If it had been actually in doubt, information obtained through the whistleblower web site, Wikileaks, has verified Chinese government fears more than its continued charge of the region this phone calls Xinjiang, which is also known as Eastern Turkestan. The majority of illuminating associated with Chinese federal government stress are the cables directed in order to Chinese anger, or the specter of Chinese ire, over the release of Uyghur detainees in Guantánamo to 3rd nations. A December 29, 08 cable applies exactly how Chinese Assistant Foreign Reverend Liu Jieyi fulfilled with the Ough.S. Ambassador in order to The far east in order to tone of voice Beijing's powerful opposition of release to any country apart from China, and that if the U.S. do indeed accede for this request it would "avoid harm to bilateral relationships and to co-operation ‘in important areas'". Furthermore, the February '09 cable describes the way the Chinese language Ambassador in order to Kyrgyzstan, Zhang Yannian, regarded as the feasible discharge of Uyghur Guantánamo detainees because "an unfavorable behave toward us" along with a "slap in the face". That the Ough.S. federal government was firm in not really liberating the detainees in order to China demonstrates the actual degree from the politicized nature from the Chinese judicial system. Legitimate concerns over terrorism are easy to understand, but in the actual U.Utes. government's view the detainees might most likely encounter do-it-yourself torture and execution if they came back in order to China

Chinese language government pressure in regard to the actual Uyghur Guantánamo detainees was not just applied to the Ough.S. government, but also in order to Brand new Zealand along with a number of European government authorities which were considering resettlement. Albania, Indonesia as well as Finland, in addition to European Union fellow member states just about all appear to have paid for the impact associated with Chinese language federal government disappointment. Regarding Indonesia, that was at first willing to think about 2 Uyghurs upon purely humanitarian grounds, Uyghur Guantánamo cases had been less better than additional detainees because of the negative effects taking Uyghurs would have on relationships along with China. A May Eight, 2009 cable relates exactly how "German Ambassador Erina Schaefer documented which Indonesia experienced knowledgeable China of the U.S. ask for to simply accept some Uighur detainees held from Guantánamo coupled with been consequently warned by The far east associated with ‘a large load upon bilateral relations' in the event that Indonesia had been to simply accept any kind of detainees".

The actual diplomatic wires also discuss the unrest in Urumchi, the regional funds, in This summer '09. A This summer Thirteen, '09 cable television discussing bulk occurrences within China says:

"Ethnic riots such as those who work in Xinjiang This summer 5-7 as well as in Tibet within March of 2008 vary substantially in origin and nature from bulk incidents, XXXXXXXXXXXX emphasized to PolOff [Political Officer] on XXXXXXXXXXXX. Each present severe problems for the actual Party, XXXXXXXXXXXX said, but the Party management wouldn't wait to open fireplace on Uighurs or Tibetans when they considered this necessary to restore purchase. Bulk occurrences pose a different type of risk, he said, as the leadership is ‘afraid' to fireplace upon Han rioters for fear of causing huge open public outrage that will change from the Party."

This is a relaxing viewpoint, particularly when one views the evidence presented by 50 percent reviews launched this year by the Uyghur Individual Rights Project (UHRP) as well as Amnesty International that fine detail eyewitness accounts from the use of lethal reside fireplace towards Uyghur protestors within July '09. Additionally, the actual observation which fireplace would not be deployed against Han Chinese protestors offers resonances for that various strategy used by Chinese security causes in Urumchi to Han Chinese language protests in Sept 2009. Throughout individuals protests, then Party Secretary, Wang Lequan, tackled protesters, that experienced required he inform them about government responses to security issues. An identical ask for to satisfy with the Celebration Assistant by Uyghur demonstrators in July wasn't fulfilled.

The broader consequences from the unrest additionally saw a brief dialogue on the effect it might have on Iran-China relations, and on relationships along with Sydney after World Uyghur Congress President, Ms. Rebiya Kadeer, talked at the National Press Club within Canberra in July 2009. In the latter situation, china government "privately warn[ed] a significant Aussie bank which vendors the nation's Press Membership to make use of its impact to block a Kadeer speech there".

The United States' concerns concerning the situation in the Uyghur region are available through in the wires. Inside a dialogue on plan path in Tibet, U.S. authorities clarify that it'll end up being not possible for Chinese leaders to adopt the softer line "if they look like they are doing this under worldwide pressure". The actual cable television out dated 04 Sixteen, 08, one month after the episode of unrest within Tibetan regions, also relayed the declaration "that domestic stability continues to be leadership's top priority most of all, which means there'll ‘almost surely' be absolutely no rest from the current hard line on Tibet or perhaps in places like Xinjiang." The information included in the cable additionally sheds light on the extreme level of sensitivity with which china federal government views territorial ethics, and also the possible spill over associated with unrest through Tibet.

The chance associated with methods to stress in Tibet and Xinjiang as a result of civil society tend to be debated inside a Feb Twenty-four, 2008 cable television. While suggesting which China's financial achievement will increase it's resistance to democratic reform, the actual cable television also talks about how Chinese leaders see the effectiveness of "a restricted expansion of civil culture, including improvements in the guideline of law along with a stronger part for approved beliefs, NGOs, charities and other stars within areas which contribute to social stability and don't problem Communist Party guideline." This is a significant change in considering, which has seen Ough.S. officials promote the notion that Chinese language economic development, as well as financial relations with The far east will bring in regards to a steadily democratic society; however, more faith seems to be put into the grassroots motion compared to one that starts from the best quantity of a Chinese language federal government. Nevertheless, the actual cable proves that "[i]n places for example Tibet and Xinjiang, driving a car associated with separatism leads to tight restrictions about the development of civil society." This method is viewed as counter-productive by the official, that shows that the actual Ough.Utes. federal government "should continue to express...serious issues more than Beijing's individual rights report as well as appeal to China's growing awareness that higher regard for human privileges, religious independence and the guideline of regulation will serve to promote the very development and sociable balance that The far east seeks as well as to enhance China's worldwide picture." This type of technique might take considerable diplomatic skills thinking about "China's weird concern the United States secretly promotes routine change as well as ‘separatists' within Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang".

The actual cables provide insight into the actual daily company of diplomacy that's hardly ever afforded to everyone, which is interesting to notice the amount of work done behind closed doors upon Uyghur problems. The importance of the role of the United States as a monitor of Uyghur human privileges problems within personal discussions is created obvious, and contrasts using its tactful public position. Employees of the Uyghur Individual Rights Task is well aware of the pressure the Chinese federal government exerts on Uyghur activists; nevertheless, the details of Chinese language federal government pressure upon it's counterparts is illustrative of the diploma which Chinese language authorities make an effort to control contrary stories. With increased facts in the future from Wikileaks, issues over Uyghurs might not get the headlines, however the cables have get rid of brand new gentle on the documentation of individual rights conditions within the Uyghur area.

Uyghur People from Eastern Turkistan

In the middle of the desert landscapes of Taklamakan, in the northern-western part of China, the province of Xinjiang is the least populated province while it covers close to a sixth from the country's territory. Having resisted while in generations the Han Chinese domination, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, or Old East Turkestan, fell into within the Chinese Han domination in 1949. From then, its population is primarily Uyghur People and Turkish - speaking System.

Muslim above all, the Uyghur people have a strong religious identification that, in particular, permitted them to preserve a strong big difference towards the Chinese enemy. Really, the Uyghur Kingdom of Mongolia knew a great civilization, until its absorption by the Mongolian Empire in the XIIIth century.

While in their historical past, the Uyghurs successively taken on Shamanism, Manicheism, Buddhism and the Nestorianism before finally converting to Islam when the Arab conquerors beat the Chinese in year 751 BC., therefore starting the way to the Islamization of the entire Central Asia.

Under the influence of the beliefs which they taken, the Uyghurs used successively, and sometimes in a competing way, a great number of written forms (turco-runic, brahmi, tokharien, soghdien) before developing their own graphic system.

this is a huge selection of Uyghur books written using the Arabic alphabet by !magination Lighthouse

The arrival of Islam was a great modification mainly because it was accompanied by the absorption of the Uyghur areas in the enormous Turkic and Islamic Empire. Thus, the descendants of Genghis Khan slowly replaced their writing by a Arabo-Persan alphabet, still used these days.

If their writing, their language and their religion mark a real difference with the tradition of Chinese Han, the Uyghurs also differ from their characteristic, so characteristic of Central Asia's people. A shiny skin, eyes representing a whole pallet of colors, from black to deep blue, features directing out to the Mongolian, Turkish or Uzbek origins of these men and these women.

For a few years, China has included the proper identity of these remote people, although they represent only eight million people - a little for this kind of large land. So, the Uyghurs are now part of the fifty six racial minority groups having been well-known in an official way by the People's Republic of China.

This particular law will allow them a few privileges in a land exactly where their big difference is very often repressed. Thus, Uyghur families escape the "single child policy" and their language is known as the second official language in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

The integration of the Uyghurs and their culture in China, however, seems really illusory. The presence of all-natural sources in Xinjiang, and its closeness with countries recognized as sensitive, highly encouraged the government to speed up the sinicization of this area. Million of Han thus came to settle in this new Chinese eldorado, monopolizing the more significant responsibility jobs.

In reaction to this true will to assimilate the Uyghurs into the Chinese culture, an independent party like East Turkistan Islamic Movement(ETIM) was born in the early 1990.

Asserting more flexibility, but in particular the acceptance of their true identity, this movement was seriously repressed by the power authorities in location Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

The situations of September 11, 2001, were the perfect occasion for the Chinese government to justify true reprisals: they declared the "Uyghur freedom fighters" as dangerous terrorists linked to Al Quaida because of their Muslim origins and their proximity with Pakistan and Afghanistan... However, the terrible repression which followed did not calm down the anger. The Uyghurs population continues today to proudly keep up their identification and their ethnic heritage , though they become a minority on their own land.

Making Money on Line

Businesses would be more interested in saving trees if money grew on them.Cross-posted from TriplePundit.

In 2009, I cofounded a company called CO2 IMPACT to develop high quality carbon offset projects in the Americas. While I have a Ph.D. in business, I have frequently been too focused on my values to justify the business case for a lower carbon footprint. I guess I care too much about what we are doing to the planet and what we are leaving behind for my son, Mateo.

Along the way, I have learned a painful lesson that hopefully can help other aspiring climate capitalists: Most people and most industries don't really care about the planet or climate change. They care about things that matter to their pocketbook or to their bottom line. I am of course exaggerating a bit as, for example, most of the Triple Pundit readers care about the environmental and social impacts of their activities, not just the financial.

Most of us noticed that Obama's recent rhetoric about energy efficiency and renewables avoided the topic of climate change altogether. This is not because Obama suddenly doesn't care about climate change. It is that he has learned what messaging works with the American people. Jobs, economy, jobs, oh yes, and did I mention jobs?

How we frame the issues and opportunities related to the low-carbon economy is incredibly important. Too many of us, myself included, wear our passion on our sleeves and focus on the wrong issues in trying to help engage a skeptical public to make the transition.

This is of course why Peter Byck developed a documentary, Carbon Nation, (which I blogged about recently), a climate change solutions movie "that doesn't even care if you believe in climate change." This is also the reason why I cowrote the forthcoming book, Climate Capitalism with Hunter Lovins. We hope that by removing the "debate" about climate change from the conversation and focusing on the profits, jobs, and economic growth that can be achieved by making the switch to a low-carbon economy, we might have more of an impact on public discourse and private action.

When CO2 IMPACT first started promoting our services to the market, our messaging focused on our ability to help companies reduce their emissions and generate extra revenue by selling the carbon offsets into the market. My opinion now is that was definitely the wrong message. We now focus on showing how companies can save money, or make more money, by engaging in energy efficiency, fuel switching, or methane capture projects. Oh yeah, and by the way, you can make some additional revenue from offsets to improve the project return on investment and grow your "green" brand at the same time.

Take our coal mine methane projects in Colombia. There have been two explosions from excessive gas in underground coal mines in Colombia this year killing 26 people. Last year, more than 200 miners were killed in similar explosions. While there are socially responsible mining companies who are absolutely concerned about the health and safety of their employees, the best arguments to get clients to embrace coal mine methane capture projects are financial. Mitigate operational risks of explosions, gain access to the methane as a cheap, green energy source, reduce their operating costs from ventilation systems (if you drain much of the gas, there is less ventilation requirements), and, oh yes, reduce their climate impact and gain additional carbon offset revenue.

Think Latin American coal mines are the only companies who care more about their bottom line than their impact on climate change? North American companies, except for a few notable exceptions, are the same way. Many recent articles in Triple Pundit have rightly recognized Walmart for its recent transition to being a climate leader. Does anyone really think that Walmart is doing this because they have suddenly become treehugging liberals? I don't think so. They are doing it because they are saving money. And lots of it. And Walmart, yes Walmart, won the Aspen Institute's 2009 Corporate Energy Efficiency Award [PDF] because of this commitment.

GE has made major efforts to promote their low-carbon green solutions. Sure they use their campaign to build their green credentials, but mostly they are doing it to generate more green bills. The Ecoimagination program is generating more than $18 billion per year in revenues for GE.

In conclusion, my point is for all of us who care about the planet and want to be part of the transition to the low-carbon economy, we need to focus more on the economy part, and slightly less on the low-carbon part. That is the fastest way to get to 350 parts per million.

How is Elop going to address this by
using Windows OS? He has to do more than just charge more, he has
to produce better product at competitive prices, which keep getting
lower. Elop will have to license the Widows OS, which is an
expense, one that he would bear to nowhere near the same extent if
he used Android. I feel he mistakenly looks at this as Google
commoditizing the Android platform, in lieu of the more reasonable
perspective of Google commoditizing the entire portable computer
space.

Well, the answer has arrived. Microsoft is buying Xx% of Nokia for paying Nokia over $1 billion to product Windows Phone 7 hardware.
Nearly all of this money is undoubtedly going into R&D and
marketing. Nokia and Microsoft (their new defacto owners) invariably see
Google as the pre-eminent trheat and are pulling out all of the stops
to nullify said threat. This also answers the question of how Elop, the
Nokia CEO will be able to deal with the reduced margins of having to
buy OS licenses while competing with vendors who get Android for free –
Microsoft is not only footing the bill, but investing in the business
as well. You see, the drop in Nokia’s share price is highly unwarranted
and their is visible synergy in this deal. Nokia gets to remove the
costs of OS R&D from its line times, sunk costs that have apparently
had negative incremental returns as they have had their asses handed to
them by Apple and most definitely Google – who knocked them off of
their number one market share perch in just over a year.

Microsoft gets the economic benefits of an existing hardware platform
that happens to have the number one marketshare metric in the world,
and gets it for just over a billion dollars. This is a win-win
situation. The question is,  will it win againt Google. Both companies
will still fail if they don’t execute on Google-time, who has compressed
development cycle years into months – literally!

From the Bloomberg article linked above:

Shrinking Margins (yeah, you’ve hear thist from me often enough)

Espoo, Finland-based Nokia needs to cut
costs to keep operating margins from narrowing further, after they
shrank to 4.9 percent last year from 19 percent a decade earlier. For
2011 and 2012, Nokia may cut its budget for research and development in
devices and services by about a third from last year’s spending of about
3 billion euros, said Sami Sarkamies, a Helsinki-based analyst with
Nordea Bank.

Microsoft spokeswoman Melissa Havel
declined to comment on the specifics of the agreement. Laurie Armstrong,
a spokeswoman for Nokia, said the final contract hasn’t been signed and
the company will share further details when they are complete.

Nokia’s royalty payments will help
Redmond, Washington- based Microsoft make a profit on the accord even
after the payments to Nokia, one person said. Some of the payment to
Nokia would be made before the company starts selling the phones,
meaning Microsoft bears some upfront cost in the partnership.

Microsoft shareholders want the company
to salvage its mobile-software business while also reining in costs. The
company doesn’t break out results for its mobile-software unit, and
instead groups them with the profitable Xbox video-game business, making it difficult to evaluate the financial performance of phone software.

Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer
has come under pressure from investors and his own board to improve
sales of mobile software after the company lost market share to Google
and Apple. Microsoft stock has declined 7.8 percent so far this year.

The agreement for the more than
billion-dollar payment was part of a campaign by Microsoft to keep Nokia
from choosing Google’s Android operating system, one of the people
said. Nokia also opted for Microsoft because Windows Phone software,
which is newer than Android and has a smaller number of handsets for
sale, gives Nokia a better chance to stand out, one of the people said.

The agreement also has Microsoft paying Nokia for the right to use its patent portfolio, one of the people said.

As part of the deal, Microsoft will use
Nokia’s Navteq mapping products for functions such as geolocation
services and selling local advertising and coupons tied to a user’s
position. If successful, that also could generate additional revenue for
Nokia, which will share in the sales. The two companies will also
divide revenue from services like search and advertising, Microsoft
President Andy Lees said last month.

I’ve been warning my subscribers about margin compression in this
space, and its about to get much uglier – to the extreme benefit of
consumers of personal and enterprise tech. Previous (and prescient)

Monetizing the Mobile Computing Race

We have a pretty firm idea of who is in the pole position as of now,
but that position is both risky and volatile, not to mention medium to
long term in nature – see Navigating BoomBustBlog Subscription Material To Find The Google Valuation Drilldown.

A more risk averse strategy is to go long on the component vendors
who supply those battling for pole position. Last week we released the
document Long candidate #1 – Hardware: The Mobile Computing Wars
to subscribers that outlined who our number one pick was after an
initial scan. This is not necessarily the absolute final say on the
matter since we have yet to perform a full forensic analysis, but the
company does look good in comparison to over 120 peers. Non-subscribers
should reference The Potential Equity Investments Most Likely To Prosper From the Google/Apple/Microsoft Mobile Computing Battle.

I am releasing the draft of the full shortlist of prospective long
candidates as of now (17 pages, 5 companies) to subscribers. Please be
aware that is a draft document and work in progress, but it is quite
informative nonetheless.  See Mobile Computing Vendor Long List Note WIP. Those who wish to subscribe should click here.
